ABSTRACT
The upgrading of fabrication plants is surveyed . The various choices available to the designer and the possible pitfalls due to hidden variables or overlooked details are discussed. A design and management solution which involves a comprehensive analysis of the company size and capitalization along with such details as local factors in personnel recruitment as well as the desired manufacturing re q u i rements, has been developed to minimise the risks and delays at this time of global financial upheaval and extreme volatility in the market place.
