Sony has announced plans to reduce the headcount within its electronics division worldwide by approximately 8,000 as it experiences a slowdown in consumer demand. Part of the cost saving exercise includes a greater level of CMOS image sensor manufacturing being outsourced, the company said. Sony is still expanding image sensor production but will conserve cash by using third parties for the capacity increases.

On a wider basis, Sony plans to reduce the total number of manufacturing sites by approximately 10%, from the current total of 57, by March 31, 2010.
