The opening of the expansionA ceremony for the opening of a US$150 million expansion at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) was held in New York.  UAlbany’s NanoCollege now covers more than 800,000 sq. ft, including 80,000 sq. ft. of Class 1 capable cleanroom space, making it easily the largest and most state-of-the-art high-tech complex at any university globally.  This expansion will support more than US$1 billion in future investments and make 600 new high-tech jobs available by 2013.

NanoFab East (NFE) Office and Laboratory Building and NanoFab Central (NFC) Cleanroom Building increases laboratory and class 1 cleanroom space more than 350,000 sq. ft. to CNSE's Albany NanoTech.

Several notable figures were in attendance, including Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, New York Governor David A. Paterson, Dr. Alain E. Kaloyeros, Senior Vice President and CEO of CNSE of the University at Albany, IBM Senior Vice President and Director of Research Dr. John E. Kelly III, UAlbany Interim President George Philip and other global technology leaders.

"The continued expansion and growth of the UAlbany NanoCollege, along with New York State's recognition as a global leader in nanotechnology, is a testament to the significant investments that the New York State Assembly continues to make in this cutting-edge high-tech industry that offers promising careers, exceptional pay and benefits, and a bright future for all New Yorkers," said Assembly Speaker Silver.

The buildings will include Research and Development (R&D) programs, business deployment and commercialization outreach initiatives for a list of international companies.  One of these companies IBM, which plans to extend its R&D partnership with CNSE through 2013, when the company will have invested in excess of US$1 billion into CNSE's Albany NanoTech Complex, helping CNSE create more high-tech jobs in Upstate New York.  By 2013, the NanoCollege should be able to gain employment of more than 2,00 scientists, researchers, engineers, faculty, and students.

The 250,000 sq. ft. NFE will act as headquarters for International SEMATECH in addition to home to the Institute for Nanoelectronics Discovery and Exploration (INDEX), a US$505 million plan focusing on cutting-edge nanotechnology research for future generations of transistor technologies.  International SEMATECH hopes to create 450 jobs in its headquarters, with 4,550 jobs created across the rest of New York State.
