Confirming the recent demonstration of annoyance by Applied Materials, Mike Splinter that spending on lithography equipment was eating into his company’s sales opportunities; TSMC has placed its largest single order this year with ASML.

This week, TSMC placed a batch of machinery equipment purchase orders with the Dutch lithography firm that had a total transaction value of approximately US$171.6 million.

As previously reported, foundries such as TSMC are shifting to immersion lithography, which comes with a higher price tag, but efforts to improve throughput to pre-immersion levels have proved successful.
