Semiconductor equipment book-to-bill ratio at lowest level in over 4 yearsThe September book-to-bill ratio for North America-based manufacturers of semiconductor equipment plummeted to its lowest level of 0.76 in more than four years, in the latest figures released by SEMI. Semiconductor equipment bookings reached $753.6 million. The bookings figure is 13 percent less than the final August 2008, lowered level of $867 million, and 39 percent less than the $1.24 billion posted in September 2007.

“The continued decline in CapEx spending is accompanied by a major global economic downturn that may have a significant impact on overall consumer electronics spending,” said Stanley T. Myers, president and CEO of SEMI. “Clearly, concern over these larger economic issues is restraining any immediate capacity investment plans."

According to SEMI, the three-month average of worldwide billings in September 2008 was $990 million. The billings figure is seven percent less than the final August 2008 level of $1.06 billion, and about 36 percent less than the September 2007 billings level of $1.56 billion.
