International Rectifier Corporation has said that the current business conditions warrant a global workforce reduction of 18% and the closure of two fabrication facilities to reduce operating cost. IR expects 850 jobs will go before the end of 2009.
IR is consolidating production at its 200mm fab in Newport, Wales, which was regarded as its most leading-edge facility. This followed further expansion back in 2004, when IR used the facility for what it claimed was its most advanced ICs using its High Voltage IC (HVIC) technology. The facility has had a chequered history with multiple owners over the years. The downsizing of operations is expected to occur by the end of 2009 and save IR approximately US$8.0 million per year when completed.
IR’s facility in El Segundo, California where its Headquarters are is to close completely by the end of 2009. Production will shift to its fab in Temecula, California. The closure of this facility is expected to save approximately US$12.7 million per year when completed.
IR expects to incur costs of about US$20 million over the course of the consolidation and closure of both fabrication facilities.
