SMICSemiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) has made three new executive appointments: Chris Chi as chief business officer; Simon Yang as chief operating officer; and Gary Tseng as chief financial officer. Mr. Yang’s appointment as COO comes as a result of the recent resignation of Marco Mora from the same role.

Chris Chi joins his new role at SMIC from his former role as a consultant for C-Square Consulting. Prior to his initial role at SMIC as senior vice president of Corporate Marketing & Sales, which he assumed in 2008, he held management roles with companies such as Freescale Semiconductor, UMC Europe, UMCi Ltd. Singapore, UMC and Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd. Mr. Chi has a Master’s degree in materials engineering and is currently studying for a Ph.D. in materials science at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Simon Yang first joined SMIC in 2001 as the VP of technology development and senior VP of technology and manufacturing. He rejoins the company from his most recent role as CTO and senior VP of operations at Chartered Semiconductor. He has also held the role of president and CEO of CiWest Corporation. A graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Dr. Yang has a Ph.D. in material engineering and an M.Sc. in physics He also has a B.Sc. electrical engineering from Shanghai University of Science and Technology.

Gary Tseng’s most recent role was as COO at China Solar Corporation. Past employs include CFO at Legend Semiconductor (LSMC); CEO and founder of Digital Display Manufacturing Co.; CFO and senior VP of United Microelectronics Corporation; and CFO and senior VP at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company TSMC). He also spent eight years in various management posts Philips Taiwan Limited, including a role as corporate treasurer for all the Philips companies in Taiwan. He has an M.Sc. in finance from the University of Missouri-Columbia, a B.Sc. in accounting from National Cheng-Kong University in Taiwan and is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant and Certified Internal Auditor in the U.S.
