Infineon: thanks for the memory! (Part 101) |

The rumours surrounding Infineon Technologies plans to sell-off the
memory division have been going on all year. The fact that they are
still around should mean something must be in the air!
Most the rumours have come from the investor community, with the
semiconductor trade press covering the "story" more times than I can
care to remember. Now it seems Needham & Co bankers, have got into
the act by stating that a decision is due Thursday, when the
supervisory board meets in Munich, Germany.
However, what's different in this "story" is that specific details are
being cited, though caution should be noted as "insiders" are still at
play. The difference though is that the companies planning to take over
the memory unit of Infineon, seem more logical than previous "rumours.'
Firstly, the Nanya connection comes up due to the Inotera connection.
That's been an obvious one from the start, but now we have Micron
involved, who it is said will take on the US based fabs of the German
company.
That makes sense to me as Micron has a 300mm fab in Virginia, while
Infineon has a 200mm and a recently ramping 300mm fab in the same US
State.
My only problem with the whole saga, is that though the Needham report
reckons that the industrial and comms divisions will be sucked back
into Siemens, Infineon would pretty much be left with automotive.
Will this be enough to keep investors happy as that sector is hardly
going places, though it is a safe bet! Where is the real potential for
growth etc...?
We may just have to wait till Thursday, then again it could just all be vapourware!
