AMD’s CEO keeps world and his dog waiting over ‘Asset Smart’ Print E-mail
May 08, 2008 at 03:28 PM
All those expecting Hector Ruiz to finally reveal the plans for his ‘Asset Smart’ strategy during AMD’s annual investor conference will have been disappointed.

Ruiz said in his opening remarks that he hopes to reveal details in the near future. That’s obviously as close as the ‘near future’ comments he made last time.

Expect more speculation and waffle from the world and his dog on what exactly is Hector’s ‘Asset Smart’ strategy.

I am wondering if the asset Smart Strategy has to do with what was published in IEEE Spectrum. There is an article in Spectrum Online that talks of a semi company (AMD?) using the Toyota method to achieve a lean operation. Mr Christensen, the author of The Innovator's Dilemma, Solution , etc seems to have lead the effort in Dresden. The data he presents in the article resembles the data for the efficiencies Mr Ruiz presented in the slides of his quarterly meeting a few days ago.

Is the use of the Toyota method the Asset Smart Strategy he has been announcing? I hope is a lot more than that if he expects to save AMD from burning in the end of the year crash.

I am sure Intel is celebrating, however they might face EU and US regulation. Is that better or worse for Intel?

Hector's asset light plan is already in full motion. AMD already started laying off people, and the converted fab in Dresden Fab 38 sits idle. Hector ran Motorola semi into the ground, the same way he is doing it at AMD.

Given their licensing agreement with Intel, how are they going to spin off the fabs? Isn't there a minimum ownership issue involved in fabbing those parts?
