Asset-smart details to be given in near future, says AMD’s Hector Ruiz Print E-mail
Apr 17, 2008 at 11:11 PM
RuizThe widely touted but long anticipated strategic business move to an ‘asset-smart’ model for AMD would seem to be getting closer judging from comments from Hector Ruiz, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of AMD. Ruiz told financial analysts in a conference call that tangible details of its asset-smart strategy would be revealed in the ‘near future.’

Ruiz also said that he was leading the complex aspects of the model and was being undertaken at a ‘fast pace,’ though he declined several times in the Q&A session to be drawn on revealing any details or potential timing.

As noted by one of financial analysts, it is about a year since Ruiz first stated that AMD was starting a review of an asset-lite strategy that was later dubbed asset-smart.

There is an interesting analysis of the planned strategy at http://www.tomshardware.com/news_print.php?p1=5206

It seems to have been documented with AMD's internal information.

Time is running out, if it takes too much longer to come out of the oven, there won't be much of a market share left to build upon.

More concerning are the inherent flaws of the asset “syndicated” strategy that seem to include: (1) Licensing Process Technology from IBM Alliance; (2) Forming a new Joint Venture with IBM and Chartered to operate the Fabs in Malta, NY; (3) Renegotiating the IP license with Intel; (4) Divesting AMD Ownership out of its current Fabs; (5) Raising Capital through AMD MPU+GPU Division; and transferring debt to (6) AMD Fabs Division. Such a complex move entails so much compounded risk that it is almost assured to fail.

AMD should go Fabless without so much sightseeing and focus on reinventing the way that low cost MPUs + GPU are made. This strategy is at least fundable PE level.

Regardless, the IBM+AMD association seems more and more the last stand of the dinosaurs, a last ditch effort to fight off evolutionary forces.

It is time to buy Intel and TSMC stock, at least these guys understand their business.
