AMD needs to be acquired by a merchant fab. This way the combined company will have expertise in micro-processor design and process technology. Otherwise if AMD fades away the prices of micro-processors will again rise, as Intel will yet again have no driving force to lower its prices. Ofcourse MircoSoft, Dell HP and the like will never allow that to happen, but AMD either needs a merger, or management change, and an improved product road map.

amd and microsoft need to get together and rule the compter biz...integrate a cpu with video and operating system as one

AMD just purchased ATI, now if they could get their asses in gear they shouldn't have a problem. They need to go and wage a full out war against not only Intel and their processors but Nvidia and their GPUs. ATI's cards have better drivers and support for Crossfire than Nvidia and it's SLI but their newest cards have been lacking. I think that if they step it up and really push forward designing new processors and cards they will be able to re-establish themselves.

microsoft needs to buy them and put intel in the ditch

I do not believe AMD has changed that much from 3 years ago, the only thing that happened is that three years ago Intel realized it had a competitor and started competing. Back then it was Intel that cut 10% its workforce, and went out in an all-out war against AMD.

I believe that when there is such a wide asymmetry of forces in a battle for a technology and a market, then entrepreneurial and guerrilla tactics are the only ones that can offer a viable alternative for the weakest competitor.

Fabless? Why not! In battle only those willing to die may win and survive.

I do not believe performance is the only thing that rules anymore in MPUs, GPUs and the like. Cost vs. complexity is more important in a mature market; and both can be maximized by going fabless to a fab process amenable to heterogeneous integration rather than hard core performance. Perhaps TSMC or Chartered can provide that process platform.

Perhaps AMD needs to shrink even further, change the paradigm, and reinvent itself. Chapter 11 might be required as part of the reorganization. That will alleviate the debt burden and allow them to restart reinvigorated.

AMD needs to merge with another company before it's too late. AMD is too small to survive on its own.
