According to several recent news reports, Advanced
Silicon Materials LLC (ASiMi) is planning to stop selling silicon wafers to the
semiconductor industry and increase supply to the solar panel community by the
beginning of 2006.
The move is in response to growing demand in the solar
energy market and the higher prices it can obtain for its polysilicon products.
In June the company announced that Renewable Energy Corporation AS, a Norwegian
company was planning to acquire a 75% stake in the company and shift production
focus.
This comes on the back of growing concern over silicon
supplies as demand is ahead of supply due to semiconductor sales and the fast
growing solar energy industry, which SEMI highlighted during this years SEMICON
West in July.
According to reports ASiMi supplies around 5 percent of current silicon wafer consumption.
Concern is centered on other suppliers being able to add sufficient capacity to
meet the forthcoming shortfall.
