Micron mad on memory infects Nanya! Print E-mail
Feb 21, 2008 at 03:04 PM

Reuters is citing sources from both Micron and Nanya Technology that a joint venture agreement has been signed between the two, a deal that includes Micron licensing its DRAM process technology and which could lead to more collaboration.

It is a well-known fact that Qimonda is Nanya’s technology partner. Qimonda - and therefore Nanya - and offspring Inotera Memories have relied on Qimonda’s deep-trench DRAM process since inception.

Though deep-trench has future scaling problems, they are certainly not at the 68nm node, and Qimonda has partnered with its manufacturing friends to migrate to its next process technology in the coming years.

That makes such a deal surprising, so either this is just vaporware, or else something far more significant and interesting is taken place behind the scenes.

This deal ackowledges the fact that Qimonda will go under sometime this year.

Editor response: Not under but acquired. There is a deal brewing right now in that respect and the other party is a North America-based manufacturer of DRAM, NAND and CMOS image sensors! Expect the announcement very soon as negotiations and especially price are almost done. A certain executive from Qimonda has had to cancel a trip to a tech conference in San Jose next week as things get finalized.

The finance people (not involved) think that there is a flexible route for Micron that keeps the $2 billion cash intact. Its share based deal on the back of Infineon having a stake that keeps value down. Infineon needs an exit and Micron has the door open.

If this is right, then Micron has 3x 300MM DRAM fabs in Taiwan. Two 300mm fabs in Singapore and a 300mm fab in Europe. Correct me, but Samsung or Hynix doesnt have any of that???

Although Qimonda has a good price at this moment, where will the buyer take the money from?

Doesn't MU use stack and Qimonda use trench technology for DRAM? Do you still believe MU would acquire QI?

Nanya has denied the report: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Nanya-to-Dismiss-Partnership-With-Micron-79264.shtml

"According to Nanya's spokesman, the report is anything but accurate and was surely not issued by the two companies' officials. "The [DRAM] industry is in such a difficult situation right now, so there are a lot of rumors. This is just one of those rumors and it is not true," said Pai Pei-lin, a vice president and spokesman of Nanya Technology."

Nanya's spokesman statement was the "anything but accurate." Appears the report of a joint venture was true.
