Barely a week ago, we highlighted that ATI
could be sniffing out an additional leading edge foundry. The graphics Fabless
company was expanding product ranges as well as ramping its latest high-end
GPU's on 300mm wafers as fast as possible at TSMC.
The need for ATI to start some serious
multiple sourcing going forward seamed to us as a given. Chartered
Semiconductor confirmed yesterday that it had indeed won ATI as a new foundry
customer, though not for the R500 GPU's we had previously speculated on.
However, the foundry win is still
significant as Chartered will now be able to demonstrate its competency in a
real-world manufacturing environment for a high-volume, media processor
(IMAGEON 2240) for entry-level camera phones.
Using Chartered's improved low power 130nm
CMOS process, ATI gains both performance and competitive pricing on 200mm
wafers. Chartered wins with a new major customer with nothing but upside
potential should the foundry execute correctly on the fulfillment.
