On Friday Intel Corporation and Lam Research Inc.,
separately announced company initiatives to support the efforts of relief
workers tackling the hurricane Katrina catastrophe that impacted southern US
states at the beginning of the week.
It must be said that neither company attempted to win kudos
from their announcements. Indeed the tone and wording of the announcements
underlined both companies employees determination to do something for the
hundreds of thousands of people effected by the natural disaster.
Intel's planned actions also highlight the frustrating delay
in tangible assistance cities such as New Orleans have endured—that the rest of
the world has seen unfold. The company is allocating equipment, money and
skilled staff to the relief efforts as well as involving a string of technology
partners.
It would not be surprising to see more semiconductor
companies announce support programs in the coming days as the enormity of the
disaster continues to unfold and relayed around the world.
In fact, it should be a given that an industry that has
perpetually pronounced its unique capabilities to enhance the quality of life
for people around the world, should actually be a major donator to the relief
efforts.
It would also be good to see some level of humanity from the
trade press to refrain from writing about the disaster, especially from the
perspective of its possible impact on the growth rates (money made) in the
remaining part of the year. I am sure it will have some effect, but I for one
couldn't care less and I am pretty sure most people within or without the
industry couldn't care less either.
