Michelene E. Miller, a Ph.D. student at Alfred University, has been presented with the Bruker AXS X-ray Diffraction Scholarship for her research paper entitled “Novel Processing of Microporous Glass-Ceramics for Gas Separation.”  Ms. Miller was presented with the $6,000 scholarship at the 2007 Materials Research Society Fall Meeting in Boston.

“Using high temperature XRD, we determined that nickel-doped cordierite glass-ceramics are candidates for application as permeability-controlled microporous membranes to separate out carbon dioxide and hydrogen gases in fossil fuel power plants, both reducing greenhouse gas emissions and generating hydrogen,” Ms. Miller explained.

The Ph.D. student’s advisor for this research piece is Dr. Scott T. Misture, Professor of Materials Science at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in New York.  Bruker’s Scholarship presentation is based on excellence in experimental work by students in the advancement of XRD, and Ms. Miller’s work was deemed unique in its content and worthy of the award.
