Air Products now producing 60 percent more tungsten due to memory demand Print E-mail
Nov 15, 2007 at 02:23 PM

ImageDemand from memory manufacturers around the world saw Air Products expand tungsten hexafluoride (WF6) capacity at its Hometown, Pa., facility by 60 percent in 2007. Primarily used to construct vias for metal layer interconnects as well as tungsten silicide conductive lines, Air Products said that it had made an exact manufacturing copy of its existing plant to ensure the same high-purity grade WF6 is available, reducing the need for extensive re-qualification by customers.

"The continued strong demand for WF6, especially from memory chip manufacturers, convinced us the time was right for an expansion," said Corning Painter, Vice President of Electronics for Air Products. "This expansion extends our leadership position in fluorine chemistry. Having concluded our business restructuring, we are focused on serving our customers and providing supply chain security."

The company will continue to ensure purity of supply by analyzing the gas in its state-of-the-art trace metals laboratory, which is also located at the Hometown site.
