I just finished up a speaking gig at the Parker Hannifin's Process Advanced Filtration distributor meeting in Naples, FL. (btw, nice view of the Gulf of Mexico, swaying palm trees, etc. from my room.) As part of my semi/micro/nano overview, I tucked in a short list of alternative acronyms and initialisms that I have collected over the years. Gauging from the audience's response, I think some of these may be less alternative---and more useable in the "real world"---than I realized.

Here's a sampling.

  • PPW --- parts per whatever

  • POM --- point of misuse

  • OCD --- obsessively compulsive distributor

  • MPD --- multiple personality distributor

  • ZVA --- zero value added

  • MTTL --- mean time 'til lunch

  • MTBS --- mean time between screw-ups

  • FPE --- finger pointing exercise

  • BUF --- badly utilized filtration

  • WIP --- wafers in peril

  • FUCT --- flagrantly unacceptable cycle times

If you have any alt acronyms that you'd like to share, bring 'em on.
