SEMI honors Samsung exec with green award Print E-mail
Dec 04, 2006 at 01:36 PM
Kudos to Chang-Gyu Hwang, the Samsung Electronics' exec who won one of the chip industry's most prestigious environmental awards today, SEMI's Akira Inoue Award. What caught my eye in the trade association's press release announcing the news was the level of specificity of Hwang's efforts to make the huge Korean chipmaker greener.

Among the statistics cited were a 210,000-ton reduction in direct carbon dioxide emissions since 2001 through the use of waste-heat recovery, the introduction of more energy-efficient equipment, and optimized wafer processing. Emissions per wafer of PFCs since 1997 have been lowered by 57% since 1997 by a combination of gas replacement, ubiquitous process optimization, and new abatement systems. Normalized water usage went down by 44% from 2001 to 2005 (an amount said to be equal to more than 12 million tons), while photoresist use decreased by 70%, miscellaneous chemicals by 35%, and gases by 29% over the same period.

Much of the semiconductor manufacturing sector prides itself on its environmental, health, and safety (EHS) efforts, but I'm not sure there are any comprehensive, industrywide databases showing the kind of information compiled by Samsung. If you know of any such resources or have any other thoughts in the EHS realm, please add your comments below. I will also be checking with other sources to see what kind of green data exists.
