For the first time, the "Flex" conference has added flexible and printed microelectronics technologies and applications, pushing beyond its original mandate of flexible displays.
In the second industry forecast of the opening session, Lawrence Gasman of NanoMarkets offered some numbers for nondisplay markets such as organic RFIDs, photovoltaics, sensors, printable toys and novelties, and lighting.
He believes a "fundamental transformation" of the electronics market is going on, as it moves into thin-film, organic, and printed technologies. He sees the above-mentioned nondisplay segments reaching total revenues of $9 billion by 2012, with RFIDs commanding half of the pie, while PVs and sensors taking in nearly $3 billion of the remaining share.
Considering the prodigious growth inherent in Gasman's forecasts, there certainly are some attractive "value propositions" (a phrase he used, well, quite often during his talk) for those willing to take the risk.
