The timing couldn't have been better for Polymer Vision CEO Karl McGoldrick's speech to the Flex crowd.
His company, which will be moving into volume production at the "world's first rollable display manufacturing facility" this year, announced yesterday that it had an initial customer---Telecom Italia---for the first-ever commercial product incorporating such a flexible display, PV's Readius mobile reader device. "A new industry is coming out of its shell....This conference will take on a whole new meaning now," said an effusive McGoldrick.
But where was the device? Throughout his presentation, you could sense people were waiting for him to whip out a Readius every time he brought his hand out of his pocket or reached for something unseen. But alas, no Readius appeared.
I asked both McGoldrick and company CTO Edzer Huitema about the case of the missing Readius. As it turns out, the company is planning a major launch at the high-profile 3GSM World Congress next week in Barcelona. Seems there are a limited number of Readius units (though neither gent would disclose just how many), so an unveiling at Flex wasn't in the cards.
With the debut of Readius, the term "rollout" takes on a whole new meaning.
