After attending last week's Flexible Display & Microelectronics conference in Phoenix last week, it occurred to me that there needs to be an addition to the lexicon of manufacturing terminology, especially as the commercialization or "productization" of flexible electronic products starts to gain a bit of momentum.
The CMOS guys use "first silicon" to describe those initial processed wafers coming off a development or production line, while the FPD folks have been heard to say "first glass."
Why not call those brand-new flexible chips, displays, photovoltaics, and the like popping out of the end of the production sequence "first plastic"?
If this term has already made its way onto the lab or factory floor, please let me know.
Otherwise, feel free to add it to your workaday glossary.
