NIST's Advanced Technology Program is back, but for how long? |

One of the best bang-for-the-buck U.S.
government R&D programs over the years has been the Advanced Technology Program (managed by NIST), which has helped pair government and corporate monies to back high-risk industrial research projects. After a few years in budgetary limbo, ATP is back and looking for applicants. A news story I wrote about the 2007 competition posted on www.smalltimes.com earlier today.
Although ATP has funds for this year, its future is in doubt. The executive-branch budget for next year does not include any allocations for the program.
The zeroing out of ATP would be a mistake, now more than ever. If you believe that this country is experiencing an R&D and technological competitiveness crisis and that the federal government does have a role to play in helping underwrite cutting-edge industrial science, let your Congressperson and Senator know that ATP is an essential part of our 21st-century technology-policy game plan and should be funded.
