I'm normally asleep when NBC's "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" comes on.
But last night (Friday) I was up and saw some of the last show of his weeklong stint broadcasting from San Francisco. As part of the program, there was a short bit about the host's visit to Intel HQ in Santa Clara. There's some pretty funny (and silly) stuff in there, with Conan poking fun at the company's vast control freakishness, nerd culture, cubicle farms, self-referential museum, and the like. This despite (or because of) Intel being one of his primary sponsors during the week. I guess dual-core processing helps enable a significant increase in the satirical abuse datastream. Damn electrons.
But the bit also included what may be the first time a major U.S. TV celebrity has ever visited---or at least was filmed visiting---the inside of a chip fab. Conan put on a cleanroom suit (XXL, no doubt, given his height) and went inside the 200-mm facility's cleanroom. Nothing like bathing in yellow-orange litho-safe light while wrapped up in an ultraclean monkeysuit to inspire comedic banter! As someone who has been turned down repeatedly when requesting Intel fab tours---except once (thank you, Intel Ireland)---I found Conan's antics somewhat liberating.
Here's one YouTube link to the tall geek's Intel segment, as well as a link to Conan's homepage on the NBC site, for those who want to check out more behind-the-scenes footage of his Intel outing.
