After a brief hiatus (blame it on tech difficulties with the blog, competing deadlines, etc.), Chip Shots is back.
There are many things to report from last week's Semicon West pilgrimage, so stay tuned for observations, musings, scoops, and such over the course of the next few weeks.
This year's Semicon West was bittersweet for me. It was my 20th, stretching back to the days of corn dogs, exhibitor tents, and wonder in San Mateo. Last year's show was more like a wake, since MICRO's impending shutdown had just been announced, and I didn't so much work the show as pass through it in a trance. Nineteen years of Semicons under the Microcontamination/MICRO banner had come to an end.
This year, wearing my Small Times and Chip Shots hats, it was back to biz as usual, sort of. The big difference was my emphasis on tracking emerging tech, not mainstream semi. Yes, a few meetings had to do with pieces of the chip fab and supply chain puzzle, but most of my time was spent listening to presentations on---and talking with folks about---carbon nanotubes, nanomaterials, MEMS, and especially solar or photovoltaics (PV).
My news story about the solar fab supply chain at Semicon posted earlier today at www.smalltimes.com. Of course, I couldn't cram all of the info I collected into 700 words, so look for a few more PV postings later this week.
