2008 semiconductor capital spending heads further south, says Gartner
Oct 23, 2007 at 09:22 AM
With a slew of chip manufacturers having released quarterly financial results in the last week, Gartner believes that capital spending in 2007 will be higher (2.7 percent) than its current forecast released at the beginning of October. This is due to companies like Samsung spending up to a $1 billion more in 2007 than they had previously stated.
The problem, according to Gartner, is that many companies are now projecting CapEx to be lower in 2008 than 2007. Gartner is now forecasting that CapEx will actually decline by 7.7 percent compared to the early October projection of a 3.1 percent decline. Due to the constantly changing business dynamics in both the NAND and DRAM space, Gartner is expecting continued fluctuation in spending plans going forward.
