Soitec reached record-high consolidated sales of 33.8 million Euros for
the second quarter of its 2004-2005 financial year. Half-year
consolidated sales reached 66.4 million Euros - an increase of 55.7
percent on a year-over-year basis, and 45.9 percent sequentially over
the second half of 2003-2004. When the currency impact of changes in
the Euro/Dollar exchange rate is excluded, first-half wafer sales
increased 62.8 percent, versus the same period one-year ago. In the
light of the strong demand for SOI wafers, selling prices remained firm
during the first half.
Sales of 300-mm wafers surged to represent 27.8 percent of total
first-half wafer salesup from 14.4 percent of wafer sales for the full
prior fiscal year. Sales of 300-mm SOI wafers in the second quarter
accounted for 32.5 percent of total wafer sales, as the industry
transition to larger SOI wafers continued to build momentum.
The company has yet to make an operating profit but expects to reach
breakeven point by year-end, due in part to the growth of 300mm SOI
wafer demand and price stability.
The company is also expanding production of 300mm SOI wafers at its
Bernin II facility, which it claims would be the last round of
expansion before the site is at full capacity. Subsequently, the
company is planing to build a new facility, though various sites both
in Europe and around the world are being considered.
