Applied Materials acquires ATMI's treatment business Print E-mail
Feb 04, 2005 at 11:00 PM
Applied Materials, has purchased the assets of ATMI, Inc.'s Treatment Systems business for an undisclosed cash amount. ATMI had made public its wish to divest non-core products earlier in the year. The Treatment Systems Division provided point-ofuse abatement systems to the semiconductor industry that treat gas emissions from process chambers before they are released to the environment. These systems include dry, wet, thermal and integrated thermal/wet technologies.

Dan Sharkey, ATMI Chief Financial Officer, said, "This sale will complete the divestment of our six Technologies businesses. Now, ATMI's business model has been completely transformed into one of sustainable growth and profitability. We will book a small gain on the sale of this business and will have sold six businesses during 2004 for total cash proceeds of approximately $100 million. The divested operations include the Gallium Nitride venture to Cree; the Life Safety Systems unit to First Technology, a division of City Technology; Epitaxial Services to International Rectifier; Fab Services to Materials Support esources; the Emosyn smartcard business to Silicon Storage Technology; and with this sale, the Abatement Equipment business to Applied Materials."

The business will be operated as a division of Metron Technology, Inc., a company recently acquired by Applied Materials. Metron will continue to support the gas abatement requirements of current and future process equipment for semiconductor manufacturing and other industrial applications.

"ATMI's effluent treatment products are a natural extension of Applied Materials' recognized leadership and long-term commitment to providing environmentally responsible solutions to the semiconductor manufacturing industry," said Russell Ellwanger, group vice president and general manager of Applied Global Services. "This acquisition, combined with Applied's core process knowledge and extensive environmental expertise, allows us to provide a broad range of optimized environmental abatement solutions to customers for multi-vendor systems and applications."
