Dr. Richard Flynn, corporate scientist with 3M Industrial Business Laboratory, received the 2004 Tekne Leadership Award in the established company category, which honours an outstanding individual who, beyond a specific innovation or achievement, has contributed significantly to Minnesota's technology expansion.

Flynn is the inventor or co-inventor of many of 3M's key engineered fluids patents of the last 10 years, including hydrofluoroethers, which, as replacements for chlorofluorocarbons and perfluorocarbons in solvent and heat transfer applications in a range of industries, are a major advancement in materials to reduce ozone depletion and global warming. He also was a contributor in the development of the perfluoroketone family used as a new clean extinguishing agent for firefighting, commercialized as 3M "Novec 1230" Fire Protection Fluid.
