Ted Reichelt of Intel's global environmental group had a telling quip about his company's (in)famous approach to replication during his ISMI talk on his vision for sustainability and the greening of products, processes, and fabs.
"Intel's business model is kind of like Starbucks or McDonalds, because you do a lot of copy exactly."

But he sees Intel loosening up a bit on its once-sacrosanct approach, with more innovation being allowed to come into play. Sounds like it's not exactly copy exactly any more at the new Intel.
