The "Breakfast in the Valley" feature, which is published periodically in Electronic News online, doesn't always hit a home run, but it's usually worth a look.
Last Friday's installment, "What's Driving DFM?," gathered several design-for-manufacturing pros from across the spectrum, including big (Synopsys) and small (Blaze DFM, Ponte Solutions) suppliers as well as foundry (Chartered Semi) and IDM (Fujitsu) players.
Here's a sample from the roundtable:
Electronic News: Are the commercial DFM tools available today from the EDA vendors sufficient for customer use?
(Toshiyuki) Shibuya (Fujitsu): That is still in progress. We don’t have a complete solution right now-–that still needs to be improved.
(Walter) Ng (Chartered): Fujitsu is a different case. There are a lot of technologists there that understand the problems very well. But when you talk about the fabless space, it’s a very different situation. Most of the customers may not know what they need and they are looking for either the EDA folks or manufactures (sic) to tell them what they need and that’s not a straightforward answer. There’s still education that’s going on. Tools and technologies are coming to market but they are still going through a maturity process. There are very few integrated solutions that are complete. It’s moving forward but it’s not just there yet.
From these comments and others expressed during the discussion, it's clear that, although the DFM space has made great progress over the past five years, it has some growing up to do before it can really be called "mature."
