While I was visiting Canon Communications yesterday, several former coworkers greeted me and asked, "Tom, what are you doing here?"
My answer surprised them.
"I just bought MICRO."
Yesterday I signed the paperwork to take ownership of the remnants of the publication I edited for nearly 19 years. What remnants? The MICRO trademark, all copyrights, the content of www.micromagazine.com (including the Chip Shots blog), remaining back issues and electronic production files, and some other odds and ends. Canon sold the subscription lists to PennWell earlier this year, so I do not own what we in the publishing biz call "the names."
Let me make it clear that I do not intend to restart the magazine. There will be no second coming of the print version of MICRO, although Chip Shots and certain other elements of the Website will morph into something new and compelling in the coming year.
In the meantime though, I will continue to build the content of this blog while the rest of www.micromagazine will run in the current mode. I will update any progress made in this ongoing transformation/remix process in the next few months.
