Spansion has confirmed that it has started production at its first 300mm fab, SP1, located in Aizu, Japan. SP1 is the first facility that has produced NOR flash memory employing 300mm wafers and initial ramp to 15,000 wafer starts per month, and uses Spansion’s 65nm ‘MirrorBit’ technology at a cost of $1.2 billion.
“We are on schedule for scaling MirrorBit technology to 45nm on 300mm wafers,” said Bertrand Cambou, President and CEO, Spansion. “By leveraging this next-generation facility, and cost and technology advantages of MirrorBit technology, we can deliver on our promise to bring more value to our customers and redefine the Flash memory industry.”
With additional investment earmarked for next year, Spansion has the capability to expand capacity to produce 30,000-40,000 wafers per month in the future.
