Freescale Semiconductor has officially placed its two semiconductor fabs in Scotland up for sale. The facilities include an operational 150mm semiconductor manufacturing facility in East Kilbride and a 200mm wafer fabrication shell in Dunfermline.
Freescale's East Kilbride fab features a 0.35micron-capable volume wafer manufacturing facility, including a 92,000 square foot (8,547 m2) wafer fab cleanroom, and approximately 700 advanced process tools. It has been in operation for over 20 years.
The shell fab in Dunfermline is being touted by newly appointed sellers Colliers ATREG as a 200mm- or 300mm-capable facility. The Dunfermline site includes a 1 million square foot (93,000 m2) facility shell constructed in 1997.
Approximately 900 jobs are at risk at the East Kilbride fab with little information coming from Freescale as to the type of sale wanted. Workers at the fab have been vocal in local press reports for not being provided with clear information about the deposal.
