The efforts to shift XScale microprocessor production to preferred foundry partner TSMC from Intel's Colorado Springs fab are taking longer than expected, Marvell executives said in a conference call with financial analysts.
Marvell is currently porting high-volume products over to TSMC first with many of these currently being qualified with end-users. However, Marvell acknowledged that even some new designs would have to be fabricated by Intel for the foreseeable future.
"The reason is because we do have commitments to the customers for even some of the latest designs to be produced at the Intel fab," noted Dr. Sehat Sutardja, Marvell's President and CEO. "In parallel...we have [sic] porting into the normal foundry model, so there will be a time when a number of even new products will be still manufactured at Intel before everything is moved...I think by the end of next year, we hope everything will be moved to TSMC."
The full porting operation to TSMC is not expected to be completed until the end of 2008. It was not made apparent how long the Colorado fab would need to be retained.
In June 2007, Intel announced a reduction in the Colorado Springs fab workforce but declined to provide exact numbers. The facility was expected to close in August this year.
