UMC has announced that it has reorganized its senior management structure according to wafer size to better meet customer and internal business needs due to the differing requirements of customers using 300mm through 150mm wafer and fabrication processes.
Executive Vice President Dr. Shih-wei Sun (pictured), currently head of UMC's Central Research and Development Division and Fab 12A (300mm fab), will take the position of Chief Operating Officer (COO) for all 300mm operations that include Fab 12A, Fab 12i and its new 300mm fab currently under construction. As COO for 300mm operations, Dr. Sun will be responsible for fab operations, sales, and the profit/loss for 300mm technologies, according to the company. UMC's vice president W. Y. Chen has been appointed to the position of Senior Vice President in charge of UMC's 200mm and 150mm operations. Both executives will report directly to Dr. Jackson Hu, UMC's Chairman and CEO. UMC also announced that Vice Chairman Peter Chang will retire from his current position, effective October 1st, 2007. He will then become a senior consultant to UMC after his retirement, UMC said.
