The name game Print E-mail

It was May 22nd when Intel and ST Microelectronics teamed with Francisco Partners to spin-off the two companies' NOR flash businesses, but there was no title touted for the new enterprise at the time.

I would have thought that this would have happened by now but obviously it has not!

Given the trend of chip manufacturers coming up with silly names in recent years, I was hoping for another laugh, but I've been disappointed - it's rather boring.

Could the companies use the week of SEMICON West to announce the new name?

The positioning statement will be interesting when we finally get to hear about it, as all the company have said so far was that it would be the largest of the NOR flash companies.

That is technically true once the deal is legally done, but until then that's still Spansion's boilerplate position.

I do hope the name is not too ridiculous, but the odds of this being the case are not high as both companies are on the conservative side of the fence.

Another name game issue currently under discussion is the identification of the chip vendors used by Apple in the new iPhone. As Peter Clarke points out over at EE Times, UK-based ARM could have three or more processor designs in it, which is nice to know.

However, I did notice that Intel and STMicro didn't get a look in, nor did Spansion!

The other contender is IM Flash, the NAND flash-producing JV between Intel and Micron.
Samsung was given that business, but it is unlikely that Apple is single-sourcing flash.  Interesting though!
