200mm wafers: the long goodbye Print E-mail

In his May market report, Malcolm Penn at research firm Future Horizons noted that 300mm wafers account for 32.7 percent of the total MOS capacity.

Although 200mm wafers still make up 56.9 percent of MOS capacity, a significant drop has occurred which he feels marks the start of the decline in use of 200mm wafers.

The reason being is that in 1Q06, 200mm wafers handled represented 62.0 percent of MOS capacity while this had declined to 59 percent by the end of the year.

Apparently, 200mm capacity peaked at 71.0 percent of the total at the end of 2002 and is on the slippery slope for sure.

It will take a long time to completely disappear, so you have plenty of time to say goodbye!

If the number of reports and stories about 450mm wafers being killed off at birth prove to be correct then we will never need to say goodbye to 300mm wafers - this is just food for thought.
