The 2007 VLSI Research 10 BEST Customer Satisfaction awards have been released showing that Lam Research made it into eighth position in the large cap category after going missing in last year's rankings.
The surprises didn't stop there, as Applied Materials replaced Lam on the MIA (missing in action) list. Applied had been slowly and painfully dropping down the ratings for quite a few years, but the decline was not halted and the company is now out of the Top Ten.
Interestingly, Carl Zeiss received the best ratings among the Process Diagnostics companies in eight of the thirteen ratings categories used to judge customer satisfaction. That is a tall order for any equipment supplier, not least in the world of inspection, which like lithography is a hard area to please.
Having said that, Nikon achieved the top scores in the four categories, which is equally impressive.
JEOL did the same in the petite equipment class by getting top marks in ten of the thirteen categories.
Neither Lam nor Applied directly participate in the satisfaction report, which has been undertaken annually by VLSI Research for millions of years now, while 48,255 questionnaires are sent worldwide in six languages: English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, German, and French.
Apparently, about one in sixteen industry employees received a survey form making up almost every large and small chip manufacturer.
Why then does the VLSI Report seem to get less and less coverage every year from the trade press?
