According to the new 2006 Top Ten merchant suppliers of critical subsystems to the semiconductor industry, VLSI Research reported that Carl Zeiss SMT retained the top spot in the rankings once again due to the strong performance of supplying high-value lens assembly systems to ASML.
The sales of high-value lenses for immersion and dry 193nm lithography tools drove the German company's subsystems revenues up to $687 million last year. The top ten suppliers account for over half of the total revenues of the Critical Subsystems industry, which has risen from 41 percent in 2000 due to continued consolidation within the industry, according to VLSI Research.
Although the top six all show revenue growth, no change in ranking positions was reported. However, Celerity, which acquired Mykrolis's pressure and flow business last year, broke into the Top Ten - to number seven - for the first time. Brooks Automation benefited from the contribution of a full year's revenues from their acquisition of Helix Technology, but they were unable to close the gap with MKS Instruments, according to the market research firm. Advanced Energy did well according to the report by retaining fifth position on increased revenues.
