ImageElpida Memory has set aggressive new targets for ramping its 70nm DRAM process over plans originally detailed in January. Elpida said that due to a 50 percent price erosion Q-on-Q it is changing its plan to improve costs by significantly increasing the migration to 70nm.

In January, Elpida planned to have 20,000wspm on the 70nm process by March 2008; however the new plan targets 65,000wspm. Elpida expects to spend approximately $1.09 billion in this financial year to achieve that target.

Elpida also reiterated that it is investing an initial ¥80 billion in Rexchip Electronics, its Joint Venture with Powerchip in Taiwan, in the first half of its new financial year. Powerchip will invest the same amount. The partners expect to start production in July this year and ramp 70nm DRAM to 30,000wspm by year-end.
