IBM Corp. and Fairchild Semiconductor have both pledged to continue greenhouse gas (CO2) emission reduction plans and have set themselves new targets within the U.S. EPA's Climate Leaders program.
Fairchild Semiconductor has pledged to reduce U.S. GHG emissions by 30 percent per manufacturing index (production measure) from 2003 to 2010. IBM has pledged to reduce total global GHG emissions by seven percent from 2005 to 2012.
IBM achieved its initial goal by reducing total global energy-related GHG emissions by an average of six percent per year and PFC emissions by 58 percent from 2000 to 2005. Orginally, IBM had expected to achieve a 10 percent reduction in that period.
IBM will also focus its efforts on reducing perfluorocompounds (PFCs) further, which will include the deployment of new technologies and processes across its semiconductor manufacturing operations.
