Sipex Corporation has been in a lot of financial trouble in recent years and has closed its fab in the U.S. to go fabless while using foundries in China for its specialty application-specific standard products (ASSPs). This is proving to be a worrying trend for chip manufacturers based in the U.S., and a trend that also seems to be occurring in Europe.
However, it was nice to see a press release from Jazz Semiconductor, highlighting that Sipex will now use the Newport Beach foundry for some of its product requirements. Interestingly, Sipex will use Jazz Semiconductor's 0.5micron and 0.25micron Bipolar CMOS DMOS (BCD) processes - something the small specialty foundries in China may struggle to reproduce?
Jazz has not had a good time of things in recent years, but this looks set to change. It's nice to see a U.S.-based fabless company use a U.S.-based foundry. Amazing really!
