A new interpretation of synergistic union! Print E-mail

At least once a week a press release is churned out that one has to read several times to figure out what the release is actually saying, or in many cases what it isn't! The news that the Korean-based foundry is merging with a chemical company, better known for producing fertilizers but also owned by the same holding company - The Dongbu Group - wins this week's award for ingenuity!

I use the term ‘ingenuity' because the spin in the press release bangs on about the amazing synergies that make the merger such a natural thing to do!

Let's stop here for a moment.

We are talking about a specialty semiconductor foundry and a chemicals manufacturer joining businesses because of the synergies!

If it was that synergistic I would have expected Air Products or Air Liquide to have merged with Intel or ST Microelectronics many moons ago!

It's also not surprising to discover that apart from the cost savings touted - with the mention of any actual figure omitted, oddly enough - the press release fails to reveal anything else that could explain the ‘synergistic union.'

Ironically, both management teams will carry on doing what they did before, while apparently focused on the success of the union because they plan to create a ‘world class "Bio-Semiconductor" enterprise.'

What is a Bio-Semiconductor enterprise?

Will this synergistic union create a foundry powerhouse to rival TSMC?

Or, will this Bio-Semiconductor enterprise become a major electronic chemicals company?

Does anyone really care?

No! And that's a no to all the above questions.

So what is the point of the merger?

Save money and make a profit for the holding group - this seems to me to be the main purpose here. Now why couldn't they just say that?
