The lower utilization rates at semiconductor manufacturers - including foundries - are not having a negative affect on MEMC, a major wafer supplier. According to projections from Nabeel Gareeb, MEMC's chief executive officer, revenues are expected to grow as solar customers eagerly pick up the slack.
"The demand environment in the semiconductor industry continues to be mixed, due to some customers continuing to work through their inventory issues, which are compounded by traditional seasonality of their demand," noted Gareeb. "The solar market, however, continues to be strong, and our first deliveries of solar wafers commenced last week. Based on the indicated demand from our semiconductor and solar customers, we are targeting first quarter 2007 sales to be approximately $440 million."
MEMC actually posted net sales of $420.5 million in the fourth quarter, according to its financial figures just released. Gareeb believes that the company can grow revenues at over 30 percent per annum due to both semiconductor and solar demand in the coming years.
