Qimonda AG and Ovonyx Inc. have announced that they have entered into a long-term cross-license agreement for discrete memory products using Ovonyx's and Qimonda's patents and intellectual property relating to Phase Change Random Access Memory (PCRAM) technology.
"Ovonyx's PCRAM technology has the potential to revolutionize the Flash and DRAM businesses," said Kin Wah Loh, President and CEO of Qimonda. "With the support of Ovonyx we will expand our program to exploit this emerging technology and be well prepared for its commercialization."
Scientists from IBM, Macronix and Qimonda released details of their joint development work in phase-change memory at the 2006 International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM) in early December last year. A new key memory material was revealed as a germanium-antimony alloy (GeSb) by the scientists at the conference.
Qimonda plans to continue the work with IBM and Macronix so the new pact with Ovonyx could be seen as an insurance policy in the race to develop a volume production phase-change device.
"Qimonda's strong 300mm manufacturing presence and world class development teams provide an excellent platform for competitive and innovative PCRAM memory production," said Tyler Lowrey, President & CEO of Ovonyx. "We are pleased and look forward to working with Qimonda on their PCRAM product development program."
Ovonyx had signed a phase-change memory pact with Eplida Memory in 2005.
