Dr. HwangThe issues of environment, health and safety were highlighted at a recent Gala celebrating the 30th anniversary of the SEMICON Japan exposition.  The Gala, sponsored by SEMI, incorporated the presentation of the Akira Inoue Award for excellence in the environment, health and safety divisions of the semiconductor industry to Dr. Chang-Gyu Hwang of Samsung, who has been named as this year's recipient of the prestigious award.

Dr. Hwang is president and CEO of the Semiconductor Business of Samsung Electronics and business director of the Memory Division.  His EHS awareness throughout his work and his introduction of environmentally friendly products and processes and implementation of health and safety policies for employees has rendered him an ideal recipient of the award.

Dr. Hwang has been with Samsung Electronics since 1989 and in that time has been nominated fellow of the IEEE, recognized as "Technology Leader" by the Electronics Industry Association and has received the Samsung Special Prize Award.  He has a BSc and an MSc from Seoul National University and a PhD in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

The Akira Inoue Award is named after the late past president of Tokyo Electron Ltd. who was an advocate of EHS issues in the semiconductor workplace.  A subcommittee of the SEMI EHS Executive Committee chooses the nominees and the eventual recipient of the award based on outstanding leadership and innovation in the areas of EHS awareness improvements.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. is a leading technology provider for the semiconductor industry.
