Market research firm iSuppli Corp has got its grubby hands on the new consumer supercomputer otherwise known as PS3 and spent some sleepless nights stripping the unit apart and doing a detailed cost of components analysis.
Not surprisingly, Sony is taking a big loss on selling every unit; however the entry level 20Gbyte model is losing Sony more than the 60Gbyte version! According to iSuppli, Sony will be losing $306.85 on the 20Gbyte model compared to only $241.35 for the 60Gbyte version. In contrast, the Xbox 360 is now $75.70 cheaper to make than the US retail price, according to the market research firm. "The reason why the PlayStation 3 is so costly to produce is because it has incredible processing power," stated Andrew Rassweiler, teardown services manager and senior analyst for iSuppli. "If someone had shown me the PlayStation 3 motherboard from afar without telling me what it was, I would have assumed it was for a network switch or an enterprise server." Rassweiler believes that the console is the most powerful consumer electronics device in history and is a technological bargain—just don't tell my kids, OK! Below is the list of some of the expected and not-so-expected components iSuppli found within the PS3.
