SilterraSilterra Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Silterra), has switched from using diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to direct feed use of natural gas for power generation at its 200mm facility.

The foundry expects annual savings of approximately $381,000 US dollars making the fab more efficient and environmentally friendly, according to the company.

"At Silterra, we have always given priority to using environment friendly technologies in our plant. Our decision to switch to natural gas is not only a testimony to that philosophy, but is also a very effective way to reduce operating cost," said Bruce Gray, Chief Executive Officer of Silterra.

Installation of the natural gas system, which was completed in five weeks, cost Silterra approximately $300,000 US dollars, with expected recovery of the investment within a year due to lower maintenance and handling costs for the natural gas system compared to those of other fuels.
