Intel Corporation has announced the first of possibly several major sell-offs of underperforming divisions. Rumors had circulated for sometime over elements of Intel's communications division being off-loaded due to the shake-up announced by the company. Marvell Technology Group will acquire Intel's communications and application processor business that includes XScale processor business that is primarily based in Israel for $600 million US dollars in cash.
"In recent years, Intel has made significant progress and won major customers with this business," said Sean Maloney, Intel executive vice president and general manager, Mobility Group. "The communications and application processor segments continue to present an attractive market opportunity, and we believe this business and its assets are an optimal fit for Marvell. We have a long history of working closely with Marvell and believe it has the ability to grow the business while maintaining customer commitments."
Intel will continue to fabricate all the IC's for the group while Marvell seeks alternative manufacturing capacity, which could take a year or more to have all designs qualified at leading foundries that have aligned with XScale architecture such as UMC.
